Prior to Starcount, data science was not a central part of Henry’s role. Now, as a Senior Data Scientist, he leads projects delivering bespoke data-driven solutions to major clients such as Holland & Barrett and is an example of how hard work pays off. He does, however, still have secret ambitions of becoming a racing driver…
What brought you to Starcount?
At my previous role, I had some exposure to data science, but it wasn’t central to my day-to-day responsibilities – this was something I wanted to change. That’s when I came across Starcount. It offered me the opportunity to develop my data science skills with big data for some of the top high street retailers.
Tell us more about what your role is at Starcount.
I’m a Senior Data Scientist, currently working on our major engagement with Holland & Barrett. I’m responsible for diagnosing our clients’ complex business challenges and building advanced data-driven solutions that enable them to become customer-centric, achieving high-growth rates and operational efficiency. I do this by analysing their transactional data and third-party data to implement change in ranging, price and promotion, location planning and marketing.
What do you think gives Starcount a competitive advantage in the current market?
It can be summarised in two things; our data engineering team and third party data. The data engineering team has set us up on big data technologies which means we can analyse billions of rows of data with ease. We also work hard to automate our IP which means we can surface insight quicker than anyone else. Our third party data partnerships allow us to build a 360-degree view of the customer. It means we can understand a customer’s purchase behaviour outside of a company’s transactional data which is market-leading capability.
What did you want to grow up to be when you were younger?
A racing driver. I occasionally compete in Formula Ford so my hopes are still alive for this to come true.
What did you study in academia?
Mechanical engineering. You don’t have to study computer science to succeed at Starcount. There is a strong support system with some amazing talent so, with the right attitude, you can really thrive!
